With a nod, Grace finally conceded. She wanted to take off her leg and go to bed, so she grabbed her things from the reception area and stepped outside. The air was almost electric as a breeze had picked up, tossing the leaves across the yard in a whirlwind. She could feel the storm coming. She prayed it passed quickly and didn’t linger to add more tension to the retreat. Voices filled the darkness, and she paused. “There she is now,” Evangeline said, and Grace grimaced. She wasn’t in the mood to deal with Adriel. “I’m headed to my cottage for the night,” she said quickly without turning toward the woman. “I’ll leave in the morning.” “You’ll do no such thing,” Evangeline said, forcing Grace to stop and turn to her. “I was just telling my son-in-law about tonight's nonsense.” “Do you want to press charges?” the other voice asked, stepping out of the shadows. “You!” they both exclaimed in unison. “Do you know each other?” Evangeline asked, glancing between them. “She’s the detective who fixed the cruiser,” the sheriff explained. “You’re her son-in-law?” “Yes, ma’am,” he answered, rocking back on his bootheels. Great, she’d spent the better half of thirty minutes lusting after someone else’s husband. Classic Grace. “Press charges for what?” she finally asked in confusion. “Stupidity,” Ewan said with such a straight face Grace couldn’t help but laugh. “There was a lot of that going on,” Evangeline said with an eye roll. “Especially when Adriel tried to tell me who could and couldn’t stay at my resort. I assured her the only person with that kind of clout was me. She could kick you out of their mean girl club, but not my resort.” Grace bit back a snort because everyone seemed to call it like it was around here. In fairness, some of the other authors laughed at her joke. Only Adriel seemed to have a real issue with it. |
